I have been using google/picasa but they scale the images back or it counts to your size limit. So I have since switched to Smugmug, which so far seems to be PERFECT. It is intuitive and simple to use, and they allow you to upload photos that are 150mb EACH (which is crazy huge I think). The paid plans are reasonable w/ unlimited storage.
I haven’t joined yet hehe, I’m just doing the trial program. However, I am probably going to do it on the monthly basis initially as I am tight on cash right now. It is nice to hear positive feedback about them! I wanted something that I could host full resolution images from my dslr and this seemed like a great option!
In that case I must use Smug Smug. If all you tell guys is true (and how could it not be ), it must be much better than Photobucket (which I use now). I still kind of like the functionality of Photobucket, but their user interface and all their advertisements suck big time. Also, for posting on forums retaining the original resolution of photos is not so important (I use a T3i with 18MP resolution - TIFF files can be well over 100MB), since forums will scale your photos down anyway. (So what’s the use of being able to upload a 150MB photo when you’re going to post it on a forum?) For backing up important personal photos I use Google Drive, but I don’t share those with the rest of the world.
The reason I have continued to use Photobucket for forum photos is their reliability. I’d like a site like this to be still there in a few years and since Photobucket has such a large number of users, there are good chances they will be there then. Have you guys any idea about Smug Smug in that respect? (I’d never heard of them until now.) And what if you do their trial program and then decide not to pay? Have you lost your access to your photos then?
I’m with ya bill!! Loving it so far, it’s a very clean interface and I’m loving the options so far. I think there is even a wordpress app that will allow me to embed a smugmug slideshow on my website - but that’s down the road =)
If you get time, pm me that promo code if you can, I would greatly appreciate it! They already offer great prices.
Nice ones! What stone/strop did you finish with? Also, did you add a microbevel? It seems the edge of the edge is slightly different from the rest of the edge.
Gents, I’ve got a trial SmugMug account now. And I must say: all of your claims are true . And it is very user-friendly, too. So maybe I’ll upgrade to a paid account using Bill’s code.
I’ve got a question about account options. Bill recommended a Basic account and this seems to fit all my needs. Except for one? Usually I upload pics to share them with friends and family. I absolutely don’t want them to be shared with the entire world. However, the Basic account doesn’t have “private sharing”, which the Power account does have. Is “private sharing” the option of being able to send a link to friends and family so only they can see the pics? (Which is what I need.) Or is it something else?
I’m not sure mark, I am doing the trial right now which I think is the power account… I am thinking about continuing with this since like you, I want to be able to have private sharing. It should be a good price if we use a coupon code and pay annually. Unfortunately I tried the link Bill sent and it is a dead page, I pm’d him and am awaiting if he has another to share =)
Bill, I wanted to post a public SmugMug picture here, but I don’t know how to get the URL from SmugMug that I should place between the [ I M G ] codes here. I’ve already found out it’s not the URL SmugMug shows when you view the pic on screen in SmugMug. But how do I find out what it is?
Mark, go into your image album, click on the image. When it is full screen right click and then click on “copy image address”. This is the address you put in between the [img] tags here. like this…
Mark, I think I found a way to get the % off… I can “gift” smugmug to someone and save 40% off of their subscription, as well as 20% credit towards the renewal of mine in a year. I could sign up, then ‘gift’ it to you and we could split the 40% off (so 20% each) and then you can paypal me the $ =)
That’s good news, Josh. I guess that in the near future I will have to paypal you some money anyway . (I like my reprofiled and somewhat thinned Kershaw Blur so much that it is now my EDC 100% of the time, but I also want one lying in a strategic place in the house. And maybe something with diamond film…)
The only question I’ve still got (and you apparently, too, Josh) is whether sharing private images and galleries is also available with the basic account, since it has no “private sharing”. But as I said before, I don’t know if that is the same as being able to post links to friends and family without making my pics available to the rest of the world.
[Update] It seems SmugMug has two levels of sharing photos and galleries with specific people. The normal way is sending a link and anyone with a link can view the photos. This seems available with the basic account. And an advanced way with even more protection: your friends and family get an email directly from SmugMug and then need to make a guest account. This seems available only with the power account. http://news.smugmug.com/2015/03/10/new-private-sharing-share-with-only-the-people-you-choose/ . For me the first way of protection is sufficient.
But it’d be nice if anyone (Bill?) could confirm this.
Thanks for your extensive answer, Bill! The only question I’ve still got is the following. Suppose I have the basic account. Then I can make a gallery or folder “unlisted” (I guess this means private). But can I then still send out links to friends and family so they can see they can see these pics? Or do I need the power account for that?
Yeah I’m wanting to know what mark asked as well Bill… also, there is no place to put the discount code that I can see after I select the plan, it just asks for my personal info and card number. Is it on the screen after I hit ‘subscribe’?
