Hi Folks,
I guess this is my introduction to the community as a new user. I took delivery of my Pro Pack 2 with Gen 3 clamp 2 days ago and set it up that evening, no issues. I took my cue from Razor Edge and used the middle fingers from two cheap rubber kitchen gloves, cut tiny holes in the tips and slid them over my +3" extended rods (purchased form Oldawan). Then after I set up my first knife in the clamp the way I wanted it, I took a cue this time from my hair stylist, and wrapped a scrap of cloth around the clamp like a barber’s cape and fastened it to the clamp with a rubber band (which was installed before I clamped the knife). Worked like a champ. Breaking in the stones really generated a lot of dust, so the precautionary set up was a blessing. I come from the KME side of sharpening and although I probably will be using my Pro Pack 2 the majority of the time, I won’t be giving up my KME kit anytime soon. I guess that a carton of compressed air is next on the list of things to get. I’m also eagerly awaiting the arrival of the attachment that allows the clamping of thicker blades like my Cold Steel Natchez.

Welcome to the forum, Alan. Yes, it appears that somehow covering the internals of the new clamp is very beneficial. Some of us have run some painters tape up and down along each side. I’m fairly new as well, and just got my WEPS a couple of days ago. I also cut of the fingers of rubber gloves to protect the ball mechanism.

Wooh, there were a couple of topics on this, but it was a while back and I cannot find them easily. Maybe you can try for yourself using the search function. (The search tab, not the search box.)
What I recall is that some people placed magnets in the places where most sharpening dust would collect. The magnets caught this dust. I tried it for myself, but didn’t get that great results. Using the magnets as a vacuum cleaner worked quite well, however. Nevertheless, I’m back to a simple cleaning cloth :cheer: .

I attached a couple of rare-earth magnets to the front and back of my Gen 2 clamp and collected almost no metal particles over about a six month period. Gave up on them as useless.
On my Gen 3 vise, I closed up the open sides with tape to exclude any infiltration of metal or abrasive particles.
Between grits or for viewing with my USB microscope, I use a Swiffer duster - two quick wipes, one on each side. I’ve had outstanding results with it. Try it. You’ll like it!
The Swiffer is an outstanding dust attractant, as opposed to other rags, which might drop their collected particles where you really don’t want them. The Swiffer gobbles 'em up and keeps 'em.
