Japanese hatchet

Dad is stage 4 so he has been giving me some of his knives and he gave me this. Anyone know anything about these types of knives?

They are great utility knives for gardening - lopping off unwanted twigs to splitting small kindling . Some not all are chisel ground this is to aid cutting off branches close to the stem. This one looks like a high quality one from the handle and the sheath . The blade is laminated you can see the harder steel at the lower part of the blade it has a different finish .
When sharpening do the secondary bevel first followed by the primary bevel. If it is single sided the back will be hollowed - concave run the back with edge leading strokes - like honing to remove the burr. If you are going to use it for utilities then I would make the primary bevel quite high any where between 20-30* .

It’s double beveled. Thanks for the info!
