Frog lube

I ordered this lubricant thinking it would be a good lube for knives. All natural, non toxic. Problem is it smells like wintergreen snuff. Reminds me of the time when I was young chewing it. Not sure people would want their knives smelling like wintergreen. What’s your thoughta?

It depends on what you want. For most knives I use Break Free CLP. If you are using a knife for food then mineral oil would be safe. If you want an oil that is non-toxic, many people recommend ALG Defense Go-Juice. I don’t think it’s food safe. It is mainly for firearms but I would imagine that it would be good for knives as well. They also have fine grease.

For my carbon steel (not stainless) blades, I use Renaissance Wax. It works incredibly well, even preventing the blade edge from oxidizing and losing its sharp in storage.

Food safe? It’s a few microns thick. “Food safe” is largely a matter of having the substance certified by the FDA, which is very expensive. I recall asking my LocTite tech about the difference between “food grade” and the regular stuff. He said “About twenty bucks”.

For food safe blade oiling, mineral oil is best. It is also very inexpensive as well.
