Threw my 940 on the WEPS for it s first touch-up and found both bevels are pretty much dead on 20 dps from the factory, pretty impressive for a production knife even in the $150-$200 range.
I think the bevels could be dropped a bit and still hold up just fine, but I wanted to get some well respected input before it goes into surgery
I’m thinking 17 dps would be sweeeeeeet!
Ok… I think I’m just going to go for it.
Hopefully 17 dps is safe.

I’d feel very comfortable taking it to 17 dps. In the worst case scenario, you might find that the edge isn’t as durable as you’d like so you’dd add a micro-bevel at some higher angle. Even then you win because you’ve thinned the shoulders a little and made it a more efficient cutter.
Mine is at 17, it was also near dead on. That being said. I have seen several wonky ass knives clearly sharpened on a machine set up by a cross eyed neanderthal checked by a blind mechanical school drop out.
Ok, it’s settled then. 17 dps it is!
Thank you kindly, gentlemen!
I rarely go over 15dps these days on any of my own

I’m assuming you add a micro-bevel the majority of the time?

Nope! Regrind and straight 15 dps… I like the edge thin most of the time at about .005" thick at that angle.

Gotcha! I’m off work today so finishing up the 940 with the newly made balsa strops is all I have on the agenda. Keep y’all posted.
superior knifeNah man, pick up one of these instead,
that is too funny! haha[/quote]
Man, that right there is friggin HILARIOUS…Just one more reason why we love the guys over at BladeHQ.
Oh. And by the way. I WANT ONE!
On this knife I went with 15. I’ll do this with a lot of knives, see how they hold up, then either strop back to sharpness or decide if I need a microbevel.
I think it can depend also what you’re going to be using the knife for. The 940 for me is kind of a tweener knife even though it has a longer blade. I’m not going to reach for it when it comes for heavy cardboard work or other heavy use so for me it’s more of a mail opener, package opener, average EDC use, etc knife. In that case, 15 dps shouldn’t be an issue.
I haven’t used Benchmade S30V that hard, but Spyderco S30V at 15 dps has been fairly impressive to me and easy to bring back to hair popping sharpness with the strops. Again, I don’t baton trees or cut through car doors, but do a lot of whittling and heavy cardboard work and is just my 2 cents.
Here’s a quick pic of my 940 reprofiled at 17dps. Thanks for all the contribution!

Balsa report? Im guessing you liked it with the 5/3.5u pastes?
Thinking same sorta thing to keep it flat as long as possible…Great job on a great knife!
Nicely done mate. It looks awesome.
In part because of this thread i wore my 940 today. I took my daily photo and put ut here and there.
I ended up leaving a face book group today over my benchmade 940. The manager demanded I retake the photo with out the 940. It was a group open to all traditional knives.
Apparently the 940 need not apply. You know blade, handle ,lock. With 300 knives, I am not going to sift through what forum I post a picture on based on what pen I have, gun ,or knives in the photo.
So beware some facebook groups don’t like 940’s

Dude, words can’t explain how they make me feel as I near the end if sharpening a knife… I keep re-mounting the 940 for random yet " necessary" reasons just to have an excuse to use them all over again…
Thank YOU, Josh! Your perspective, approach, and your ability to successfully transcend them in such a way that makes sense on video is pretty much priceless.
