What angle did you use? At 30dps, the first time I smacked something with it, the edge folded.
12/09/2015 at 2:23 pm #29778Now that’s a whole lot better!! What was the magnification and what was the grit used?
As noted in the first post, 50 grit diamond paddles. The scope claims to be 200 power, but with cheap Chinese stuff who knows.

09/24/2014 at 5:10 am #20437You write you’re able to feel a burr after the 1000 grit stones. Are you sure? I’m not saying you can’t, but I certainly can’t feel a burr after these stones. If you are in error, you may also have mistakenly interpreted something else for a burr after the 100 grit stones. And, as Leo wrote, this initial burr is crucial.
Yes, I’m absolutely sure that I can feel the burr on everything from 800 down. I have a lot of experience sharpening woodworking tools via other methods and I know what I’m feeling for with a burr. At 1000 grit, I guess you’d say I feel the burr by implication. I mean that, if I work one side for a while and then drag my fingers over the edge (nearly parallel to the side of the knife, not parallel to the table), it feels different on the side where the burr should be than it does on the side I was working. To me, this implies I’m feeling the burr. Though only BARELY! It’s not like it is at coarser grits were you can definitely feel there’s this metal hook folded over to one side.
It’s sort of like the difference in rubbing velvet with the grain vs against it if you’ve ever done that.
Also, I think a microscope will be my next major sharpening purchase, though it won’t be soon. I think I’d stand a lot better chance of figuring this out if I could see what’s going on.
09/16/2014 at 7:35 am #20294I was specifically asking if he wanted more knife shapes to look at for his program. I have no particular need to show off my knives for the heck of it 😆
09/16/2014 at 5:52 am #20292Should we still take photos of our knives and upload them?
09/09/2014 at 7:43 am #20204I’m the OP. Figured I ought to bring some resolution to the thread and answer my own question.
I’ve used it for a month with the 100/200 and 400/600 diamonds. Sadly, even for what I wanted, this was not enough to produce an acceptable edge. Basically, as it came off the 600 diamond stone, it was sharp to about the point where I start thinking it’s maybe time to sharpen the knife. Granted, I never actually get around to sharpening the knife before it’s much, much duller 😆 I think for many people this might be satisfactory. However, I was used to something sharper than that, even for working knives. I added the 800/1000 diamond and the Super Fine Ceramics this month and, after doing one knife, I think we’ll be in the ballpark for what I’m used to once I get the stones broken in and improve my technique a little.
09/09/2014 at 7:34 am #20202My new ceramics show heavy loading on the ridges just like the ones in the above pictures.
Since these heavy black lines indicate ridges of ceramic raised above the average surface, does this indicate a problem with the stones?
07/24/2014 at 12:03 am #19525OK. That doesn’t include the ceramic stones.
Oh, you’re right. Somehow I had crossed up that it had the ceramics rather than the diamonds.
So that totally changes my questions then.
Are the included 100-600 grit diamond stones enough to get me what I want?
07/23/2014 at 11:31 pm #19523Yeah, the basic $275 setup is what I’m talking about (not either of the Pro Packs).
