I think my brain just went on shutdown. I was looking at what else is available for strops since I have the 5/3.5 micron w/ leather…
Balsa, Nano-Cloth? Sprays? Uhhhhh too much! I assume smaller micron = finer abrasive? And would the sprays be used with a strop or with water stones?
05/25/2013 at 7:10 am #11707Noooooo no rabbit hole!
Alright I will admit I’m already staring at the onyx base, newer arms, and the finer strops… but I can’t afford it all and I hate progressive upgrades; I either need it all at once or not at all. That’s why I ordered what I did because I knew I’d get satisfying edges with it lol
05/25/2013 at 6:32 am #11704Oh and for the record – I can’t afford a set of the Chosera stones. I just spent plenty for right now! LOL
05/25/2013 at 6:29 am #11703I completely understand π
I wasn’t expecting much of a mirror finish with the stones/strops that I have – and that is okay. I prefer a real working edge, not a show edge. I was stropping it and my finger slipped and with absolutely no pressure I sliced off the tip of my ring finger and didn’t even feel it. So I know it’s sharp – but that is what happens when we play with sharp things.
It was a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 and the shoulder was bumping the shoulder of the stones and maybe my description wasn’t entirely accurate. It’s not a half inch – a little less, but I’m at work and can’t whip my knife out to measure it. I was thinking of giving it another go but this time reversing the knife direction and mount it handle facing away from me – but I don’t think that will get me any closer to clearing up that little spot.
Thanks for the tips/advice though! I need more knives to sharpen… lol
05/25/2013 at 3:29 am #11695Wow. This really works! My only issue is getting the area of the blade near the shoulder / finger guard. It seems like the stones miss a little less than half an inch of the blade. More than likely it’s me… but I like it a lot so far!
05/23/2013 at 8:19 am #11592Ahh! Well, I should switch that around then… I ended up doing rubber side against the screw. Thanks!
05/23/2013 at 7:18 am #11590Everything just arrived!!! π
Call me stupid… but how do I use the metal/rubber washers to mount the WEPS to the base? I assume rubber side to the WEPS blue base?
05/18/2013 at 4:21 am #11526Ahh… I was reading that balsa is a little firmer than leather and it’s very porous and works well… I’ll have to just wait and see what it’s like with the items I ordered. This is going to get expensive very quickly lol
05/17/2013 at 2:26 pm #11520lol thanks guys. Would it be beneficial to order the 1 and .5 micron diamond strops? And what’s this Balsa strop I see? Far too many options… making my head hurt. Currently I use a knivesplus strop which has served me quite well…
05/16/2013 at 3:58 pm #11502Everything shipped! π
05/15/2013 at 6:59 am #11486Thanks!
One question I do have is with the strops and ceramic stones… which order do I go in after the diamond stones? I bought the pro pack 1 and both sets of ceramics (1200/1600 and Micro Fine)
05/14/2013 at 6:59 am #11460No questions just yet, it all seems pretty straight forward. I think I’ve watched every YouTube video that exists for the WEPS. I just wish it would ship already! LOL
05/13/2013 at 1:59 pm #11434I have quite a few knives set aside for practicing on. Sadly lost a huge part of my knife collection to theft (several Emerson and Spyderco) but I am slowly getting back into collecting. I have three cheap smith & Wesson knives, and low end Spyderco that I’m gonna practice on. Then once I’m proficient I’ll take a chance with my paramilitary 2. That’s my current edc.
