Need for standardized nomenclature

We have to develop a glossary fixing the nomenclature regarding the WEPS and any related parts or systems. For knives too.

There is frequently confusion when commentors ask about certain parts to their WEPS. For instance; the blocks holding the stones are referred to as blocks, hones, stones etc. The stainless bar supporting those whatchamacallits needs to have a specific name, too.

Having an engineering background, I know that WE has a drawing for each part. Each drawing has a name which is used throughout the design process. Each assembly drawing showing groups of parts which are connected to each other have names. Clay, can you please post exploded assembly drawings with their names so we can stop confusing each other?

That’s perfect Clay… so would the proper term for the part that got upgraded w/ pp2 be the “guide rod hinges”?

That’s a good start, but I think it should be right at our finger tips where everyone can find it and refer to it? Maybe labeled “Nomenclature” instead of “Instructions?”

Where there’s an assembly, like with part no.s 16 and 17, (blocks) what are the names of the individuals features: the abrasive plates and the bores that slide over the guide rods?

I’ve felt frequently that I didn’t really understand what new users were talking about when they asked questions. It’d be good if I could direct them to a similar drawing with a “huh?” This helps a lot.

Now get us all to use this nomenclature, Tom 😛 . Kidding, because, although my English is reasonably good I think, I sometimes have difficulty following many of the technical discussions. Particularly the ones about modding I can sometimes only follow with a dictionary at hand.

Mark, I’ve often wondered about your mastery of the English language – more correctly, American English. Of course accents and inflections are lost in written communications, but I can usually tell when a person is writing in their second language. Not so with you. The only times I’ve been reminded that American English is not your first language is when you ask about words that are new to you. Very impressive.

I’ve spent, all told, probably a couple of months in Europe on business, included a short visit or two to Holland. So I’ve learned that most professionals and youngsters there speak excellent English. It helps that they’ve grown up listening to and watching the BBC. Your written English, however, seems to have almost no trace of the UK noticeable. I’ve even wondered if maybe you’d lived in the US for a while. So to what do you attribute your excellent English, friend?

Re nomenclature, having a glossary and parts diagram at hand would give me a place to send a newbie who asks a confusing question.

Actually, that’s a notch prettier than I was thinking, but it is outstanding!

Could we maybe get a folder of that sort of content in a tab along the top of the forum banner?

Did I just learn that what I’ve been calling a “block” is actually a “stone assembly”? Or is it a “handle”?? 😛

Those kind of issues would be great for discussion here on the forum.

Thanks, Tom, I’ll pas on the complimemts to my old English teacher. And to the editor of the English computer magazine who asked me to write articles for him when I was 16. I’ve never lived in the States, but I do visit it occasionaly for my work. Just as many other English speaking countries, particularly Canada and the UK. (And I’ve written a book in English, that also helps.)

I did that first one, but I have turned the project over to our graphic designer. He’s working up the quote and I’ll see if it makes sense to have him do it. If not, I’ll get to each of the components as quick as I can.
