What angle did you sharpen that zdp to? Very nice Job! I will have some that will eventually need to hit my Wicked Edge.
Please let me know how it holds up.

I just got my first Spyderco Knife…well…knifes to be exact..I went to the seconds sale and got some and I have been able to repair every one so far. I have a Stretch with the zdp-189 full blade and a Caly3.5 with a zdp-189 core and 420J2 folded over the whole core except for the edge.

The Carbon scales on my Caly were all scratched up so I refinished them and rounded all the edges. Lots of sanding! I left it a flat black look rather than a polished. Now it feels like satin in my hands.

The Stretch had some issues. It had bad liners and the holes for the pocket clip were dragging on the blade making it rough. I totally took that sucker apart and lapped both liners with the 800, then the 1000 WE stones until flat. Then I sanded the FRN scales down so they did not overlap the metal liners and rub on the blade. Now I can flick that sucker open. The edge grind on it is visibly bad. So I want to get that onto my WE as soon as I get my 800 and 1000 broken in.

I never owned a Spyderco because I never liked the looks of them and they did not have an assisted deployment version like I had on my Kershaw Leeks I loved so much. Now I am really liking these knives. The hole allows you to thumb flip them right open one handed easy! And they come very sharp. I was impressed. The more I carry the Caly, the more l like it!

They seem to know what they are doing there at Spyderco. Super glad I went to visit them. I will be keeping my eye on them.

    Thanks,

I decided on 18 deg per side. Hope it holds up. I have SOG, Kershaw, Benchmade assisted open knives. Amazon had a sale on these and decided to try. It feels good, is really thin to fit in pocket for EDC. But I really like my Benchmade Barrage 585 also, I go back and forth between the 2.

    Hi Steve:

As you probably know, I too have a Delica in ZDP and love it. I too put off buying my first Spyderco because they are downright ugly-assed knives (note the plural).

I’d be interested to know what you found for the factory grind angles. Mine were 17.5 left, 23.5 right for a total of 41 deg. for the included angle. Also I measured 7.6 degrees included on the FFG faces.

If you are offended when others point out spelling errors, please let me know and I shall desist.

    Tom

    tcmyer,

Mine was not quite 17 deg. It could have been 17.5, but I decided to do at 18 deg. Second the ugly, but it feels good in your hand.

I heard from someone that the zdp-189 steel holds an edge longer if you mirror it. Have no idea if that is true. If it is, why would that be?

I normally touch mine up with 800s and 1000s, then give a very light polish with about 5 strokes of the 1.4 or 0.6 micro-fine ceramics. This leaves just enough tooth to be effective. BTW, 20 dps.

I never heard about ZDP liking mirror polishes. Maybe the idea is to eliminate any possible stress lines that might propagate a micro-fracture. I know that’s a common practice in engine building. If there was data to back it up, I’m surprised it hasn’t been mentioned by one or more of the manufacturers.

The wear I see on my Delica is typically a pretty uniform dulling of the edge. Every other pocket folder I have shows dents in the edge which require a lot of stoning to remove. Of course, these are the result of pressing against something hard – like a staple in a cardboard box. The Delica is supposedly at RC65 and I believe it, as mine shows abrasive wear, but not plastic deformation. I’ll be very interested in the results you get with the ZDP laminated blade.

Well I did my first sharpening on this zdp-189. That stuff sharpens up real nice. At the 1K stones it just bit hard..like you touched it and it grabbed at you. I was not tired of sharpening yet so I went on to some films and ended on basla. It is sharper but does not grab out and bite like it did at 1K. I know it is sharper because now it will split hairs where it would not at the 1K. But the 1K bit more. wild. I am going to see how this holds up under my normal usage…opening chew cans, cutting up boxes and tape..boring I know..the life if my EDC. It did not hold the factory edge as long as I had hoped. So I distressed it real good and brought it to apex with the 800 and then did a lot of 1K work on it (breaking in this set) It was wierd..once it got polished..I keep looking at it with an LED loupe and it was hard to find the edge and my eye kept going to the zdp/420 seam.
17dps just for a fair comparison to the other knives I have tested..all at 17..er so.. 🙂
