What sand paper grit should I buy to clean my strops?

Wouldn’t that contaminate the strops with the grit from the sandpaper?

Could you wash ’em with something like lacquer thinner?

When a polisher’s rag wheels load up with contaminated compound, he leans into it with a hacksaw blade, held at 90 degrees, starting and stopping the wheels to keep the surface speed down. The blade knocks off all the crap. Not a suggestion, just a bit of info – so maybe just scrape ’em clean?

Or maybe the leathers are replaceable?

I’ve heard of a lot of people using sandpaper to good effect. I personally don’t do anything to clean my strops though I can say that rubbing alcohol does a great job at dissolving the buildup on the strops. The leather strips are replaceable too if needed.

Can u continue to use strops that have cuts and curls in them or do u need to sand or cut those off?

I trim off anything that would leave a bump, but I don’t worry about gouges.
If you watch Tuffy’s videos, and a few other guys, their strops are chewed to hell. So…I don’t think in the long run it makes a whole lot of difference.

But hey, I could be wrong, you’d be amazed what some of these guys know.
