New Gen 3 Pro in House!

Just got mine back from the machine shop where he printed the jaws for some custom A2 ones! Had him shave off the little hump too.

These have great clamping power, very similar to the prototype I handled.

That looks way cool! That is clamping power!

But… could you please translate your message in the sort of English a foreigner could understand? Does this WEPS already feature the printed (is that 3D-printing?) jaws? And what’s a custom A2 one? What happened? :cheer:

Haha sorry Mark I may not have been using the correct terminology.

What I meant was that I am having a friend make me some new vise gripper inserts (the part that is removeable on the existing gen 3 vise) that are made out of A2 and hardened. They will be narrower at the tip so I can get lower angles, and also I had him taper in the top so it is the width of the current gen 1 and 2 models (about 1" wide). Hope this clarifies!

Hi Josh, Since the tips are narrower will you be able to use the LAA? Will your friend make these for other WEPS Gen3 users?

Probably not since it will be tapered instead of straight up, but it wouldn’t take much to just grind off the sides and make it work. I will see if I can get some extra after I test this one out and make sure all is well.

I never use my LAA anyway… if I need lower I go w/ the Tormek small knife jig which can handle any size knife pretty much.

If I could purchase an adaptor from someone for the Gen 3 I’d order it now.

An adaptor for the LAA or the Tormek jig? Imho they both hold the knife about equally secure.

I’m sorry to confuse the issue, I want to purchase Gen3 Jaws adaptor to lower the angle they can clamp and increase the clamping force. Please keep us informed with your experience.

Does the tormec small knive adapter work for long gyuto blades, 10 or 11 inches long?

Yes it would work, however, your blade would be sticking way out in front of the vise because the tormek jig mounts fairly close to the vise itself and can’t be adjusted way back. But you can sorta get around this simply by tilting your knife to get the right angle consistency throughout.

Do ffg blades lean in the new gen 3 vise like they do in the gen 2? I find that to be the only downside to the weps. It a pain to figure out if a knife is leaning a degree or two one way or the other (especially if it’s a small knife) and then adjusting the angles respectively. If this new vise holds the knives perfectly straight, so that the angles just need to be set on the stones, I’m sold!

My Gen 3 seems to hold blades perfectly vertical. I haven’t seen any bias one way of the other. That said, I haven’t had any knives large enough to check for verticality with my AngleCube. I can only say that the bevels I’ve been getting have been looking as tho the blade was perfectly vertical.
