Neat accessories

I’m looking into a computer microscope to compliment my WEP. Any suggestions out there?

Yes! I am also interested in what others have to say on this topic.

Jeremy, I use the VEOH VMS-004. It’s cheap and kind of hard to focus, But it works great for my purposes.

Here is a picture of a .7mm pencil lead at the 400x setting.

And a picture of my delica after the 1 micron strops.

Just the tiniest little burr there. the white thing is a bit of paper towel lint.

Question for you. Have you ever measured how the angle changes as you move the stone from the vertical position to the far extremes of the blade? And further, how the angle changes when you bolt the blade in the holder at different heights? My contention is that you really shouldn’t sharpen more than 6 inches of blade without repositioning the knife as the angle varies too greatly.

Wow! I want one of these. I just checked it on Amazon, $62, is that right? Had mixed reviews. Is it easy enough to use?

drmatt357, If you read the review by Paul Cliffrd on that link He sums up my thoughts pretty well. It works really well for me when looking for that last little burr.

Edge after 14 micron strops.

Thanx. I’m trying to find out if it’s Mac compatible

$40

Those pictures look familiar…

+1 on the Veho 400x. All of the microscope progressions on my blog are photographed with the Veho. You can put the whole thing up against the WEPS clamp - the scope can be a little wobbly, but with a little practice, it’s not so difficult to do.I usually employ my daughter to push the camera button on the computer, although you can also take shots directly with a button on the scope.

For normal use out of the WEPS clamp without picture taking abilities, I use the Lumax 100x, which is a kids microscope for about $20.00 it works great. I just remove the slide clamps from the microscope’s base.

In the WEPS clamp, a small loop with a light source is probably the best. IMO, 10x is minimum, but I like to go as high as I can with magnification. - Oh, and don’t cut your nose off when checking the edge!

Funny you mention the loupe. I just ordered the Bausche & Lomb loupe and was thinking I better be careful while viewing the blade. :woohoo:

I just ordered the Veho VMS-004. I has swivel joints. I just need to adopt a mounting method to put it on my WEPS base yet keep it out of the way.

I also use a loupe and yes you have to watch the nose and forehead. Now I just need to order my laser protractor and I’ll be set when my WEPS arrives.

Excellent! I can’t wait to see your pictures!

Just a couple of warnings - 1. The closer you get magnification wise, the uglier things become. 2. shooting for perfection will take time at each grit.

It’s completely worth it, though! B)

Well, just put in an order to get some cool accessories going for myself! Called up the crew and got two sets of blank paddles in the mail to Ken Schwartz, to be mounted with a 1K/2K and 5K/8K Shapton set. Looking forward to playing with the new stones!

Where do you get the Shapton stones??? I spoke with Kay and she said they won’t be available for at least one month. Are those better than the Chosera stones?

That’s a subject of some contention, really. Both Shapton and Chosera have their adherents. In this case, I already have some Choseras for my EP, so I’m going to try out the Shaptons on the WEPS and see what I think.

I’m getting mine from Ken Schwartz over at CKTG, he’s the only one making them that I know of. Tom over at Jende might be too, they’re both awesome guys to work with.

CKTG? Nothing on Google. Is that their full name and where are they located? Thanx

Well, I was referring to “ChefKnivesToGo” http://www.chefknivestogo.com/

But the Shaptons for the WEPS aren’t listed there, just sold by one of their guys. If you’re interested, you’ll want to contact Ken Schwartz directly, and he can set 'ya up or get you any information you want. His Email is ksskss@earthlink.net

It’s not official yet, but we’re hoping the Shaptons will be available on the Wicked Edge site soon. Ken Schwartz and I are working together on this.

As to which is better - Shapton or Chosera, people know I am a die hard Shapton man. B) But there are plenty of die hard Chosera fans out there, too.

Basically, Shaptons and Choseras are the Lamborghini and Ferrari of sharpening stones, and choosing between them can be as personal as choosing Coke or Pepsi. I have and have used all the stones in both series on the WEPS, and I can honestly say that you can’t go wrong with either.

Here is a blog post I did a while back about this very topic. It doesn’t tell you which to choose, but it should help you in making a more informed decision.

I think a new thread may be in order to get both sides of the story - from people who love their Shaptons, and those other guys  who love their Choseras…

I just got my Veho VMS-004 deluxe in but can’t figure out how to zoom in close enough. Not getting anywhere near 400x mag.
