Enjoyed reading “The Inspiration”. ![]()
I spent about 6 weeks in the Nueremburg area back in '79, actually in a nearby town called Heroldsburg. The hotel I stayed at was built in the 1500’s. I woke up before dawn one morning and looked out the window. I was looking into a barn where the farmer was milking his cows by hand. Great food, but not as good as in Freiburg. Try the Franken wine. It’s a little sour, as the grapes there don’t get as much sun to produce sugar. When I was there they had a big conference going on for toy manufacturers - biggest one in the world. I think it was maybe February. They sure liked to drink the bier.
I think some things have changed since 1979, Tom
, but I can confirm it’s still a very nice area with good food. And indeed, even now the food in Freiburg is about the best you can get in Germany when talking traditional German foods. And wine… when in Germany I always drink beer, even though I normally prefer wine. The Rheinheitsgebot (yes, my dear Americans, a government rule
) was one of the best things ever to happen to them. To me (and the Germans, probably…) German beer is the best in the world.
I’d also love to visit, Clay. The Netherlands and Germany are neighbours, which may sound closeby. But unfortunately Nuremberg is a 700 km drive from where I live and I’m afraid that’s a bit too far…
Hey guys,
We’re safe and sound in Nuremberg, had a very nice evening out in the old part of town. I’ll probably be pretty quiet around the forum over the next week, but will check in when I can.
–Clay
Enjoy your time their! And don’t forget the Bratwurst with a beer. If you haven’t had that, you haven’t been in Germany
.
I know Knives and tools (Dutch importer of WEPS with branches in the UK and Germany) are there too. I’m a sort of “unofficial adviser” to them regarding sharpening supplies and have been pushing for them to carry all WEPS articles (which they will do soon, they’ve told me). If you meet them, say hi to Jasper
.
Clay, Thanks for the invitation. I would love to be in the area to come spend some time! ![]()
Enjoyed reading “The Inspiration”… one of my Dad’s most prized possessions was his two-sided field stone. The stars still out with the first light of dawn and the smell of camp-fire coffee and the sound of the fire and the swish-swush of Dad sharpening everyone’s knives before the hunt.
Best wishes for safe travel, grand adventure and good fortune. All well-deserved.
For Now,
Gib
