I’m Shawn. I’ve been wanting a WE sense I first saw one year’s ago. Well I finally bought one 2 months ago. It is amazing. I got the basic version non heim joint arms plan on getting the upgrade soon. I’ve already done about 40 or so blades. I got the 50 to 1000 froth diamond stones and the 14u to 0.5u leather straps. O and I mounted my wicked edge via boat seat swivel, so it’ll be steadier and still be able to rotate it to inspect the blade.
I’m 25 from Ohio(70 monday 30 on Tuesday). As far as interest I do a lil bit of everything from knife sharpening to working on and modifying trucks.
Welcome, one newbie to another. =) I got my WEPS mid-March and totally love it, but I have a question about how satisfied you are with your strop progression. I got the super fine ceramics hoping they would replace the 5/3.5 micron strops and they didn’t really do what I hoped they would so i’m not too sure about them. Maybe I just don’t really understand how to use them properly. Anyway, I was thinking about getting the 14/10 & 5/3.5 micron strops (already have the 1/.5) to hopefully get more of them pesky scratches out. =) What do you guys think?
Hi Sunny and welcome! I’d recommend 2 things: let your stones break in more and get a pair of either glass or aluminum platens and the 6 micron and 3 micron diamond films and use them before you strop. I think you’ll love the results. The scratches you’re seeing with a system that is only a month old are deep compared with how they’ll be as they become more broken in. For now, I’d go from 1000# diamonds to your Superfine ceramics, then the films, then the strops. Even though the 5 micron strops seem like a step backward from the 3 micron film, their action is very different and the progression works well. Only a small portion of each of the diamonds in the past makes contact with the blade and the force applied does more to push the particles into the leather rather than into the blade.
I was just semi-convincing myself if I can only just get the new microfiber nanocloth strops and .005 micron slurry…I will be set…thats it…and I really really mean it this time…maybe.
