Geometry and Kinematics of Guided-Rod Sharpeners

Anthony - are the above images useful to you or should I try something else? Also, do you have any requests for knives you’d like to profile?

Hi Clay,

Thanks! Those will be very helpful.

If you have time, then I think a blade with a recurve would be interesting, and also a larger knife (maybe a kitchen knife or something). That’s certainly enough to start with.

Pretty busy with work, so now I just need to find time to work on this…

Sincerely,
–Anthony

Added a couple more including a Kershaw Blur with a little bit of recurve and some kitchen knives. If the specs on any don’t match the grid under the knife, go with the grid. The major lines are .5", the minor lines are .25" and .125"

I can easliy understand why manufacturers wouldn’t want to give out 3D drawings of their knives or even their blades. 3D drawings can be directly loaded into manufacturing software for duplication on NC equipment.

However, they should be able and willing to give you simple 2D drawing exchange files with a profile of the edge. With that and the depth at the heel, you ought to have what you need.

Try asking for a 2D drawing of the blade alone.

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to let you know I’m still alive and interested in this project, but very busy with other things. But it will all happen eventually!

Sincerely,

Should we still take photos of our knives and upload them?

I think this was just for Anthony to grid out the different knife shapes into his CAD program for this study.

If you want to post pics of your knives, however, please post under the “knife photos” section of the forum… we would love to see them!

I was specifically asking if he wanted more knife shapes to look at for his program. I have no particular need to show off my knives for the heck of it

ahhhh sorry I misunderstood! I shall respectfully back out of sticking my foot in my mouth any further! :stuck_out_tongue:

Good idea to revive this topic, williaty!

We haven’t seen Anthony in a while. I think he’s super busy. It’s still a good idea to upload the photos though. Eventually we’ll get the data compiled…
