Darren from Downunder - G'day

Thought I’d pop into the Welcome Mat and introduce myself. My name is Darren, username Rhino, and I’m from Melbourne, Australia.
I’ve been researching knife sharpeners lately and of course it didn’t take long to find the Wicked Edge system. Great looking set up.

I am a recreational fisherman and as such I have a need to sharpen my filleting knives. Although a steel can have my knives filleting ok, it’s time that they got a good touch up. AS most of my needs will be focussed on filleting knives, I’m not so sure that the WE is the right tool for me. Most of the videos I’ve seen are of deeper, thicker, more rigid blades. I haven’t seen much with regard to filleting knives like mine which are long, shallow, thin and flexible.

As with most forums of special interests, this one has some great information and members. I’ll continue to read and research and learn from this great resource. Hopefully I can make a contribution should I take the plunge and make a purchase.

Cheers
Darren.

Welcome to the forum…

I’ve had my WE for almost two years and it’s still a better knife sharpener than I make full use of… Point being my skills haven’t come close to surpassing what this device can do.

My brother from Alaska brought his and a few friends fillet knives to me. They didn’t need to look pretty – no mirror finish or anything just a robust and a real slicer.

They were all well used, so I thinned them at 15 degrees per side and then gave them a 20 dps final edge. (They have been using – or trying to use – a pull through sharpener pre-set to 20 dps)

This way the final edge I set they can “re-create” with their pull-through.

I had to be very careful because of the flexibility you mentioned. Again, it didn’t have to be pretty, just sharp. I found it relatively easy.

That being said, some folks here have modified the front of their vise by tapping a threaded hole into which they can screw a clip that locks down flexible knives. It looks excellent. I haven’t done it myself but it is on my list of ToDo’s. (I looked but didn’t immediately find a photo to refer to.)

Another thought would be to connect with one of the Pro's here and send them one of your knives and let them have a go at it with their Wicked Edge. Once you got it back you'd see what a WE can do to and for a knife.

G'day.
