Ball Joint Mod - Taking A Little Off Top

I just wanted a liiiiittle bit more clearance, especially when doing edge leading passes from heal to tip. So, after chatting with a fellow trusted board member a while back regarding the unnecessary 3/4" deep internal threading (manufactured that way, not machined by WE) on the ball joints, I decided to go ahead and cut roughly 5/8" off the top. Not only does it help prevent the stones from bottoming out before reaching the tip, it also opens up a little more stone real estate.

NOTE: If you decide to give this mod a shot, please be aware it will likely void some sort of warranty. Measure twice, cut once. Also, it’s important to protect the joint itself with tape, etc.

Thank you as always!

Great minds…

IMHO they should come this way from the factory. I need to do this to mine but I better hold off as i have a little play in mine and may send it in for warranty replacement at some point… been that way since new, they haven’t loosened up at all because I have had them protected the whole time. Do you guys have any play in yours at all?

I have a tiny bit of play in mine, but not enough to complain about.

Hey Clay! If I wanted to buy a couple of replacement ball joint rod-end couplings, would you sell them to me? Vie viel gelt is das?

I have a little play in only one of mine.

I’m definitely more concerned about the play in the paddles. I’ll admit that my technique is still pretty crappy, so I know it wouldn’t solve things entirely. I’m just WAY too afraid to attempt reaming the stock bore so that the bushings fit. As Tom (I think?) has mentioned in the past, keeping things parallel is the hardest part… It’s been a few months since I put this mod at the top of my list and I’m STILL looking for alternatives
