Oh no, I hand sanded the entire blade to restore the mirror polish. I didn’t use the WE on this blade at all. I used traditional flat stones to hone it.

I had to make a jig to hold the knife stationary while I hand sanded. I started at 220 grit and went up to 12,000. It wasn’t too bad once I hit 600 grit.
I was fortunate that the blade had little pitting and edge chips.
Back to the original thread topic. I would think the WE will do a good job sharpening the friend’s razor. I wouldn’t worry too much about damaging the razor if it is in decent shape. If you hade to reprofile the blade shape before sharpening then I would hesitate to do it.
The straight razor I use daily is one I restored that is almost 200 yrs old. I wish old razors came with written logs of who all used them in the past.

I use bench stones for straight razors. Grits 220-1,000-4,000-8,000-12,000.
I also use a belt grinder for convex edges. Grits 400-900-1,200-2,000-2,500-3,000-4,500.
To go from 1,600 to over 10,000 seemed extreme. However, if you say others have had good results then I will go with your experience. That’s why I asked. Thanks for the quick reply.
