tcmeyer replied to the topic Vertical vs Horizontal in the forum Main Forum 1 month, 1 week ago
If I understand your question correctly, I believe that flipping the horizontal knife holder rotates the vise on the same plane (or axis) as the rod centerline, so there should be no change in the relationship between the shape of the edge and the rod’s rotational axis. It will be reversed but not otherwise altered.
As a side note, I see two…[Read more]

tcmeyer replied to the topic Low angle slipping! Ugg in the forum Main Forum 4 months, 2 weeks ago
Front to back slippage is usually due to a distal blade taper, but if Buck knives (which seldom have significant tapers to them) are problematic, then it might be something else. As Robert suggests, photos or a short video would be more helpful.
To expand on the taper problem as it relates to the LAA, the adapter is quite a bit wider than the…[Read more]

Bingo! I now remember seeing that diagram when I ordered it, but it had been a while when I finally got around to starting it up and there was nothing like it in the instructions. Thanks for the help, guys!

Yup, that’s why I assumed it would work with my PC. Even in the instructions (which are printed so small I needed the microscope to read it) it implies that it should work with Windows XP, 7, 8, 10 and 11, which to me means PC compatible. Maybe the caveat is that it’s WiFi with smart phone and USB with PCs. I don’t think it says specifically th…[Read more]

Well that explains it!
Hmm… I can mirror my smart phone to my smart TVs, so I wonder if… No, probably not, but maybe I can find a cheap smart TV about 31″ to replace the monitor…
Thanks, guys!

Thanks for the quick reply, Richard. I’ve got about ten other WiFi or LAN devices which are showing up on the device and network lists, but not the camera. I recently switched over to a new hughesnet modem/router and it’s not letting me get direct access to the WiFi data at the modem. I’ll call Hughesnet this afternoon to see if I can get a p…[Read more]

I was watching some TV show with my wife which was about helping people with hair problems and saw them using a WiFi handheld ‘scope to examine some hair. I snapped to attention when I realized how quickly and how easily the hair shafts came into focus – not easy to do with a few free-standing hairs which aren’t in a fixed plane of reference. A…[Read more]

tcmeyer replied to the topic Angles not wide / large enough? in the forum Basic Techniques and Sharpening Strategies 6 months, 3 weeks ago
It only takes a very few strokes with an 800-grit stone to flatten an edge. I think using a regular file is a bad idea.

Ribstabsheart: To save time and excessive stone wear, I file the edge flat, down to the bottom of the deepest defect, using one of the finer diamond stones – like the 800 grit. How long you need to work and edge is directly related to the amount of steel you have to remove and this process very quickly removes a lot of that steel. Having do…[Read more]

tcmeyer replied to the topic Calculating the Sharpening Angles for Blade Positioning in the forum Thoughts/Theories/Science Related to Sharpening 8 months, 1 week ago
My method is a form of “finding the sweet spot” except that I don’t try to match any existing bevel – which is what the sweet spot is originally intended for. I pick a mounting position which matches the sweep of the stone to the belly of the knife. Another way of looking at it is to imagine a line forming the radius of the edge’s belly and p…[Read more]

Tom_G,
I had trouble when the image size was over the limit. I don’t remember getting an error that said “image too big.”
That said, I now use the free software Gimp to resize my images before uploading.

Billabong: My question to you is what possible advantage to you see in a press-fit threaded stud as opposed to a dab of epoxy? Wicked Edge either buys their rod-end couplings with a special stud mounted by the manufacturer or they very precisely fabricate studs of their own design. Try to fabricate your own press-fit version and take the ri…[Read more]

Rod-end couplings are available at my local farmer’s outlet for about $8US. I buy 12-inch lengths of 1/4″-28 threaded rod (sometimes called “all-thread”) and cut it into 3-inch segments. Grind the ends flat and set them upright in the bore of a rod-end coupling with a dab of epoxy. Perfect alignment is not necessary because alignment lat…[Read more]

Billabong,
Here is a pic of the ball joint parts from start to finish. Also, the Stainless knob process from cutting the barrel of and polishing it.
It takes a lot of time and effort to make the SS knobs, that’s why I offer plastic knobs which work as well for a lower price.

Chris,
PM me your email address and I will send you a brochure with my information as well as what Airscapes has available. I’ll also send MarcH’s brochure for his stone racks if you’re interested.

billabong,
The ball joints come with no threaded rod attached. I cut a 12″ threaded rod to size – 2″ for the WE130 or 2.5″ for the Gen 3. Then I cement them into the ball joint with JB weld.
I also cut ~.5″ from the ball joint which lowers the stone and allows for more stone usage on the Gen3 sharpening shorter pocket knives. Since I sha…[Read more]

tcmeyer replied to the topic Bevel Angle Change Question… in the forum Getting Started 10 months, 4 weeks ago
After a few attempts which produced a lot of blather, I decided to leave out a lot of the details, so I hope the final result is clear enough. I chose to name it “The Wicked Edge Files.”
If there’s enough interest, maybe we should move to a separate thread.

Well, I’ve done it. File mounted on Wicked Edge system with at least some success! Video to come soon.
