You don’t buy a Ferrari when you’re learning how to drive. Because, if you were to learn how to drive on a Ford Escort you’ll be confused when you eventually drive well enough to drive the Ferrari.
I stand by the recommendations of all those who came before me and taught me so I can try to help you. Learn how to sharpen on junk or cheap knives…[Read more]

David, welcome to the W.E. forum. It’s recommended you start your sharpening experience with beater knives. Something relegated to bottom of a kitchen junk drawer. It’s better to practice on knives that are in need of sharpening. A thrift store is a good source for practice knives. This is because all the new diamond. sharpening stones need…[Read more]

I would say if the amount of effort you’re expending seems excessive to remove the edge damage with the 100 grit as you’re getting started after matching the bevel angles with the marker technique…then 800 grit may not be where I’d start… it all depends on the steel’s hardness and the extent of the damage you’re looking to remove. For…[Read more]

I’m guessing tcmeyer is not assessing Ribstabsheart’s edge damage as being significant which is why Tom’s recommending the 800 grit method and thinks the file is a “bad idea”. Possibly, tcmeyer thinks the edge damage can be removed easily and the original profile recued.
I have used a hand-held file horizontally/longitudinally across a damaged…[Read more]

I thought about using a dot of silicone sealer to cement the sockets in place. The dried excessive could easily be trimmed away with a razor knife.

The little white “keeper” balls need to be saved to reposition them whenever the ball-end guide rods are removed. These “keeper” balls hold the delrin pivot sockets in place so they won’t fall out and get lost.

All I know is the original WEGO, (WE50) was an extruded base. This new WE60 is machined. The WE60 is a single, stand alone model, it is not upgradeable. Another, better optioned model, based on this compact format is slated for release this fall around Nov.

First, on your microscope, I wanted to say: all the USB scopes I have ever used have both low and high-power magnification. Now you’re turning the fine focus just a little either way to focus the image at the low power you are viewing with. Try to turn the fine focus knob past where it goes out of focus, then as far as it goes. Then it should…[Read more]

I see from your photo your working with a WE100, not a WE120. Both models the WE100 & WE120 utilize the same “standard” style vise. The standard vise is a two-piece vise with the left side fixed while the right side floats and is attached to the fixed side by the upper screw screw. The upper screw tightens or closes the vise on the knife. Then the…[Read more]

The first visual aide I used was a lighted jewelers loupe. Like you, I quit using it when I realized just how close my face was to the sharpened knife edge. Now I use this usb handheld scope with a laptop:
I work start to finish at the same set…[Read more]

Looks pretty good. I’d work the edge a little more. It looks like there’s gaps in the burr or small edge chips that should easily be removed with a little more effort. If the chips are small and numerous across the edge I’d work at it until most of the shallower ones are sharpened out. If there’s only a few larger or deep chips across the entire…[Read more]

The WE120 is your tool. Use it how you may. For situations with very wide angles I replaced the pointed thumb screws with flat ended nylon thumb screws (10-32). These nylon thumb screws will lock the mini “L” brackets in position simply compressing against the flat sides of the square bar. If you message me with your email address and mailing…[Read more]

Welcome to the W.E. Forum Ribstabsheart.
It sounds as though you’re putting in the effort and you have a good understanding of what you’re doing. You included a lot in your post. I’ll try to break it down to address each issue.
The W.E. is basically a bench vise that clamps and holds knives vertically allowing us to move the sharpening stone…[Read more]

The forum is not dead, it’s just something you find inconvenient to use on your small format devices. That doesn’t reflect on our forum, it’s function, quality or contributions by members. I agree that this older forum format lends itself to devices that are more typing friendly. More so, a forum is for those who don’t mind writing a full se…[Read more]
