I realize that this thread is a little dated. Just wanted to check-in to see if anyone has devised a way to incorporate this suggestion.
It may be a solution to alleviate or assist in the difficulties associated with anchoring knives that incorporate a full bevel. This would be an accessory option that I would certainly be interested in… or something similar.
07/18/2016 at 10:11 am #34624Unfortunately my mine is currently in very close proximity to the Beaver Creek Wildfire and the mountain has been evacuated for the last three weeks. It has not burned yet but likely will get scorched. This could be a blessing in disguise. Here are some pics of my last trip up there removing all of my valuables, equip, etc…

You can see my mine marked in the lower right of this map. This fire map is a couple weeks old and the fire is much closer now.

So far I really like the system but have identified a couple of concerns regarding the vise. I’m sure these concerns have already been addressed and remedied here. Any suggestions or thread links are much appreciated.
- Some of my blades are etched (FeCl) Damascus, some are coated, and some are mirror finish. No knifemaker likes to insert these finishes into a metal vise without protection. For this reason I wish that the jaws were rubberized or similar to protect fine blade finishes. I plan to use a chamois strip for the protection of these finishes as a solution.
- Some of my blades incorporate a full bevel that runs from the cutting edge all the way to the spine (both flat and hollow type grinds). Thus, they have no flat spot for the vise to grab and maintain accurate center. This causes these types of blades to rock if even light/moderate pressure is applied to either side. As a result I have ordered an Angle Cube to verify angles and plan to use it on my next attempt and am optimistic that the chamois will help to keep this type of blade more stable in the vise. If not there will be some disappointment as this was not a limitation I was anticipating.
