I have a PP2 with the 50/80 and the 1200/1600 stones. I am debating on buying roo strops and. 25 spray to eliminate the rolling effect or just ordering the choseras. What do you guys think?

Save the money from the chosen a stones and get a couple 3 sets of glass plattens and enough lapping film to make use of them all

Not only will it save you money bypassing the $120/pair (more for higher grits!) choseras, it’ll also save you time not having to lap/flatten the darn things. Also you’ll be able to sharpen ceramics… Which is awesome!

I am really looking for the super mirror polish and a tree topping edge. What grits of film do you guys suggest? Thanks for the help!

You will have to buy more of the lapping films as time goes by.

Best thing to do is find a grit comparisons chart. I know there’s one on the WE website but I don’t believe it includes lapping film. Either way, the grit levels you buy should obviously be linear from low to high; diamonds, to lapping film, to strops.

I often jump straight to 2000 grit lapping film on aluminum blanks right after my 1000 WE diamonds. Then on to 3000 grit, finishing with strops.

NOTE: Just because you might finish with a stone/diamond plate/lapping film/etc. that’s technically graded as a higher grit/micron than that of a compound loaded onto a stropping medium, you shouldn’t bypass the strop… Stropping has a completely different function in the overall sharpening process. You’re no longer braiding away metal, you’re polishing the faces of the bevels and refining the edge as the softer medium conforms to the steel at its point of contact… So, it might seem counterproductive and counterintuitive to step back down in grit (actually measured in microns when speaking in terms of strops) but doing so is completely necessary when trying to achieve both a mirror finish and screaming sharp edge.

Are the glass plates double sided? Do they have to be lapped? After lapping with. 1 film what strop material and diamond Spray/paste works the best for what I want?

To get super sharp edges you can go from the 1k stones to the 30um lapping film just fine, then take it down to the 1um lapping film range, then strop at the correct angle for a bit starting w/ the 3um and go down to the 1 or so range. Should be in the HHT3 or 4 range.

Well, the glass plates simply fit into the handle and the film should sit on the plate. The glass used is nothing really special… Its just glass…

And, no, you don’t need to lap the glass because it’s already flat. Don’t ever lap it actually! Because you’ll never get it as flat as it comes from the factory. Plus, it won’t wear down like a stone because the abrasive doing the work is mounted on top of the glass and it’s what wears down. The glass is simply a surface that ensures the angle stays consistent by it being a totally flat plane that makes contact with the edge.

I actually made my own by purchasing a 12″x12″x1/32″ sheet at a hardware shop then used a cutter go break it down to size.
