Sorry, gotta know lol. I am doing this for both my mother and my mother in law and probably some other family members. How many of you guys are doing the same? Think they will appreciate it? I will look forward to hearing any and all stories after the holidays as well 😉
12/20/2014 at 2:47 am #22157If I had the raise my hand smiley I would place it here. I put the same base you have on yours Josh so it will be easier to transport and use at various locations..I dig being able to tilt it around. I will give it a go these next 2 weeks..at every house we visit..in will come the Wicked Edge.. Car is packed..just watching my wife run around looking like she forgot everything..I keep hearing “real soon” LOL.
12/20/2014 at 10:55 am #22167They say the gift is in the giving. Maybe so. I did my tenants kitchen knifes, he raves about them. The neighbors unusable carpet shears, never mentions if they’re good or not, my buddy who thanks me every time I see him, and my favorite Auntie who is an amateur chef and claims to really like a sharp knife because they are less dangerous.
Guess who I gift the most to, the ones that appreciate it most I guess(and bakes yummy deserts)! But seriously I’ve found for me it only takes one who really appreciates it to make it all worthwhile. 🙂

Since I’ve been traveling by auto, I packed my white stone base this time, too.
I will eventually put together the clamp/pivot combination but the places that I’m traveling to now actually work better with the vise on its base.
My family expects the sharpening. I have, over the years, set everyone up with small handheld sharpeners that I’d use when visiting. It wasn’t until I got to this forum with this equipment that it became obvious that I’d have to take stuff with me!! And, frankly, I love it.
I know my tools pretty well. Just bring on the knives.
Which, to address your question, they appreciate at different levels but seldom do I see the little secret smile of satisfaction probably everyone here knows.
When I hold a knife that really cuts; I can’t help be have that sweet feeling little smile come over me.
My son’s an ER doctor — he gets it. A grand-niece and her husband are chef’s. Not all chef’s really get it but they do. Nephew Cliff gets it — he’s here on the forum.
Last year I took my time and went through all the progressions. This year, I’m knocking the knives out — quick & easy.
And for all these people, the knives are still sharper than they’ve typically experienced before.
Oh, all express their thanks and some even wonder at the sharpness — all while “slamming” the knife on a ceramic plate while chopping and slicing next to the beautiful teak cutting board and then tossing the blade into the dishwasher with the rest of the forks, spoons and knives. AAAArrrrrgggghhhhh…….
A tiny bit frustrating but then I get to do some more sharpening!! (Which sometimes gets me out of dish duty!! And that, I appreciate.)
Thanks to all here for contributing to an incredible year.
I leave you with this wisdom you may have heard before.
Forget the past. You cannot change it.
Forget the future. You cannot predict it.
Forget the present. I did not get you one.B)
Wishing you all the best, safest and sublime holiday season,

12/29/2014 at 8:58 am #22318Well, I got my Mother-in-laws prison shank sharpened. And Father-in-laws modified Bowie knife fixed up a bit. That prison shank of a cutco was her first knife..so I decided to sharpen it. The Bowie had the tip broken off and someone reground it..and it was semi sharp..and has been reground like this for years. So I decided to keep the memories intact and do some edge thinning and a mini polish on the thinned edge at 17dps and then did a 1K toothy minibevel on top of it at 22dps. Kind of turned out neat with all the other weird grind marks and angles all over it.
Got my Sister-In-Laws 6 decent kitchen knifes sharpened, At least she had some wusthof knives in there along with the kitchenaid knifes.
After surveying my Moms knifes, I picked her up a Wusthof paring knife to go with her Henckel Chefs knife and sharpened up her kitchenaid chipped to crap knifes. I picked her up one spyderco serrated kitchen knife and one non serrated kitchen knife so now at least she is kind aof covered until next year. Then on to by Brothers house..Some Chicago Cutlery and a few no name knifes. He needs some help! Now I know for next year.
All in all I ended up doing about 20 knifes for gifts this year. Learned a lot and blew their minds on how sharp their knifes could be. As Gib said..now I know where a feller can just get it sharp and very usable. It does not take much. Our OCD here sure keeps us and Clay busy making more and more fun things to play with. Also, as Gib says..an then watch them pile their knifes you just sharpened into a drawer and slam it shut.. Magnet bars and knife blocks for all my family next year! LOL..I checked…they all did have and use a cutting board that is not made of glass..or ceramic..whew..
Lucky for me, my Brother allowed me to take his other folders and fixed blades home..so I can do some pimping on them and take my time. More on those later…and on another thread.. B)

Laughed out loud…. literally, as I was reading this, my sister-in-law was cutting up some shrimp with her 5″ santoku, washed, rinsed and “clink” — into the drawer with the forks and spoons….. AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH……

Looking forward to photos of your brother’s blades…~~~~

12/30/2014 at 12:00 am #22323My brother-in-law came over on Christmas day and needed to cut up a leg of lamb he brought. I told him to grab any of the knives from the magnet strip (all my better Japanese knives). He thankfully selected my least favorite and proceeded to cut up that lamb still in the glass baking dish, dragging the edge across the bottom with every stroke. Of course the baking dish was sitting on a really nice end grain cutting board… good think I have the cure 🙂

12/30/2014 at 1:28 am #22324I did 18 knives for my sister and parents. My mom rolled the edge of her chefs knife on a GLASS cutting board not 5 minutes after I finished it. I know what to get her next year now.
