I’ve been sorting out my photo files recently and came across some old photos that illustrate one or our axioms – that of reducing your angle by one or two degrees when switching to a soft platen material.  Compliant platen material can roll over an edge and soften the crispness of what would have been a very sharp knife.

These micro photos were taken in April of 2014 – a little more than four years ago.

The knife shown in the first two pictures is a standard Buck 110.  I had sharpened it to 1000-grit (photo #1), then switched to 3 micron diamond film.  The annotation should explain the situation.

The second pair of photos are of a Buck Prince, which also had been sharpened to 1000-grit before switching to 3.5 micron paste on leather strops.  No angle change was made and the effect on the edge is quite apparent.
