Anyone else getting bogus email purportedly from the forum?

I just got about 5 more, and maybe 10 yesterday. They start like this:

Haven’t seen the bogus e-mails, but the other night I typed in the Wicked Edge website address and got diverted to some other site that was a bit weird.

I just wrote it off to the vagaries of the internet but combined with what you wrote, maybe a bug/malware/virus of some kind….

I don’t even click the links that family & friends send me unless they tell me in person they are sending something!

    Thanks for saying something.

I sent an email to Clay about it. He said he is aware of it. It sounds like the upgrade to the latest software version should be more secure. As he said, “all of this hacking is driving everyone batty”.

I just consider this round of SPAM as a minor inconvenience. Thought I would throw it out to see if I was all alone in getting this stuff. It may be keyed to threads that I am subscribed to.

    🙁

Clay said the upgrade would happen soon though…

I’ve seen issues like this, even had it happen to one of my websites a few years back when the host’s email servers got breached by some spammers out of Turkey. They started sending emails in bulk from different websites before the host shut down the outgoing email system entirely to fix it!

The internet is an amazing tool, but it’s also full of amazing tools looking to take advantage of others… I often wonder if spammers even think people fall for that stuff. I guess enough do to make it a marketable tactic.

    Can’t happen fast enough. :pinch:

I haven’t gotten any spam, but also don’t subscribe to any threads. Maybe there’s a clue in there somewhere.

(Anyone also notice you can scroll the web page horizontally and see some spam links?)

The plan is to jump to an updated version of the site software that only runs on Linux. The webmasters have been trying to get it going on our Windows server but it’s buggy. They’ve got it up and running bug free on their Linux system and will redirect the domain to that server in the morning. They haven’t seen any issues with the newest version of the web software.

That is more or less exactly what I wrote to Clay via email.

    Phil,

Thanks a ton for posting your email. It reveals a frightening turn to the plot – the new beta site on the Linux server is already compromised. The url nextgenbeta.com/ is the webmasters beta server. I’m thinking that when they copied the site to the new server they brought the hack or bot or whatever it is with the site. Maybe that will actually prove very helpful to know in the end.

I believe the London Stock Exchange went over to a Linux system after loosing huge amounts due to Mr Softy; so if its good enough for them it should be for WE.

I haven’t been getting any spam yet – thank goodness. But there was a viagra ticker ad running across the top of the screen when i launched my browser and the site first came up this morning….

I’m sure there is something humorous there – viagra and knives; maybe involving the Bobbits, I just haven’t put it together yet :silly:

That’s what my father does. He always phones me if I send him something. I used to laugh about him doing this, but nowadays I think it’s quite smart…

Everything appears in a very narrow, long column on my ipad. I have to tease it to the proper screen width.FWIW
