I set a 1/2″ wide knife in the vice with the depth key in the top position. How can I raise it higher in the vice to avoid sharpening my vice jaws? Anyone got a trick or something to shim on top of the depth key to raise the blade up?

I set the angle at 20 degrees and this was hitting the vice. Backed out to 22 degrees to clear the vice, but still sharpened a little of the edge off. If I can raise it bit then I could get the 20 degrees. Looking for any ideas other than setting it free hand (unless you have a way to consistently set it free hand).

I set mine above the top set of holes and haven’t had any problem with the vice holding them. Didn’t use the depth key. I just eye balled level.
Guess you could always measure and record exposed amount for more repeatable results.

I made a small mark on my jaws to which I align the spine of the knife when I raise it higher than the top depth setting.

Eyeballing level shouldn’t create any issues since most knives spines are not parallel to the cutting edge anyway. Best bet is to put a mark on the vice when you get it to a spot that works so you can repeat it for touch ups.

I take a photo of each for reference.

    Add a few notes etc.

Being a computer nut, they are stored on the PC/iPad.
Need an app for this. 😉

Let me try again, maybe it is confusing. I think it would be beneficial and educational to forum members, to see the pictures of how you set up various knives in the clamp. Would it be possible for you to post some?

I have posted many photos in this forum, I am not the one with the problem as this thread title suggests.

It was a sincere question,,,, maybe if someone else asks you’ll be more agreeable?

Sorry you don’t think it’s important to share. I really think it would be interesting.

    Sorry

I’ll show you my serrated solution if you don’t tell anyone. :P:[/quote]You have one? Actually, not having a decent way to sharpen the serrated blades has been my only real reason for not owning any. I’d love to see what you have in mind, Chris.
