Yeah sorry man I got nothing, it looks toothy. Does it grab at you when doing a 3 finger test?

BTW the Paramilitary 2 steel is S30v on the one I did…

I have a spyderco Domino in zdp189 but I’ve been to chicken to touch it yet…Hopefully with forum help you’ll get it figured out and we’ll all learn something.

Does it cut rope very good?

Well, let me get my stretch zdp touched up like I would normally sharpen it leaving off at 1k at 17dps light strop at 15. Then I can compare.

Tomorrow will be interesting. Meeting up with Forum folks from USN in Colorado Springs tomorrow. So a bunch of knife nuts taking over a Buffet restaurant for lunch.

I am bringing 3 knifes with me.

    1) the coarse edge ZDP I did last night
    2) the ZDP stretch I just resharpened from 800-1000 diamond to 1200-1600 ceramic then leather 14-10u, 5-3.5u then balsa at 1/0.5u.
3)buck 110 folder that is left off at 1K diamond.

It is great, you can hand them all three knifes and ask which one is the sharpest..
I know that #2 is the sharpest I have done to date and passes HHT3 and 4 in some spots..But it does not feel like the sharpest on yer fingers..
It will be a fun experiment! Then they can pluck a hair from their beard and see for themselves which one is..I am going to be carrying #1 this week and it will be interesting to see how it holds up and cuts compared to what I had migrated to..which is 1K stone finish..
    Fun stuff!

I’m jealous… I wish I could find a similar cutlery lover rally here in ATX.

I have been running my knives lately at 1000 grit straight off the stones, but as my affinity for toothier edges grows, I tried something last night that was pretty nice. Most people I sharpen for request a mirrored edge, but occasionally someone wants a toothier edge.

This may be old hat to some, but I sharpened to 600 grit ending with very light strokes as usual then lowered the arms 2 degrees and put on the 5 micron strops giving each side 4 or 5 light passes. Gotta say I was really impressed with the edge. Wave cuts phone book paper with no problems and feels quite aggressive to the touch. Looks plenty aesthetically pleasing to me too. I wasn’t going to cut anything else with someone else’s knife I’d just finished though I wanted to.

I’ve been testing a large Sebenza edge in S35VN pretty hard lately at 1000 grit, but next time I resharpen, I’ll be giving this edge a try. I’d like to think the high vanadium steels would excel with an edge like this. The Sebenza and my S30V Military have excelled with the 1000 grit through extensive use in various grades of cardboard. Eager to see how this edge will fare.

Interesting note here on zdp. Both my Cali and stretch are zdp. I had them both at 17dps for the first usage (I distressed them rather heavily before sharpening them at 17dps). Both of them exhibited chipping in my normal usage and I was getting a little down on it.

Now I have my Cali with the 17 still, but with the 22dps toothy microbevel. I was opening my TW-90 box and cutting away furiously at the tape and had a heck of a time..then realized there were staples hidden under the tape. Them big ones. Not a single chip this time. Just a flattened wear spot where I hit the staples. THAT is what I was expecting from a knife with a super steel like this. It did not take long at all to fix. I hit each side a little with the 1K at the 17, then went out to the 22DPS with the 800 until it apexed then hit it with the 200grit again. This time I made straight down passes and overlapped them working my way up the blade. Then I got out the 1200/1600 ceramics and spent a little time on each at the 22DPS. It is much sharper than my first attempt at this method. Almost push cuts phone book paper. And is still very grabby. I need to bust out the microscope to see what it ended up like.

But I was very impressed to see how differently the steel reacted to abuse with the 22DPS vs the 17DPS. Chip vs wear. Now that I have it sharp again I will keep carrying it and see how it holds up. ZDP is not seeming so finicky now.

Steel from the New Jersey Steel Barron is on its way Josh! :woohoo: 1095, 1084, and AEB-L. Grinding party at my house next weekend! Come on over! Now I need to find some step pulleys so I can run my bandsaw at a way low speed…hard to wield a 48″ long hunk of 3″ barstock around on a grinder.. Good think my buddy has one of them falling band saws for steel…

    It is so… 👿

Lucky, with my 3 day and night side work and no holiday weekend, I have recouped almost half of the cost..BUT! I had 0 time to play with it..can you imagine that..Just sits in the garage taunting me.. :S :pinch:
