With the new Gen 3 vise on the horizon, which seems to clamp blades straight every time, I was wondering how important the edge half angel is to blade function. If you ground one side to 15 degrees and the other to 20 degrees (35 degree total) , and did a good job, would that blade function any better than both sides ground to 17.5 degrees?
As for aesthetics, if my high school trig is right, a blade 1/32 inch thick at the base of the edge would have a .015 inch wider edge on the 15 degree side. If one side were ground to 20 degrees and the other side to 25 degrees on the same knife the edge width difference would be .0094 inches wider on the 20 degree side.
