Another one that came into the shop last month.  Its a vintage switchblade from Thailand.  Very cool but in bad shape and missing a few screws and back spacers.

That “sproing!” sound always makes me nervous…  😛

    Breakdown & cleanup time…

Reassymbled after cleaning.  Fiberglass pencil works really good for polishing in the cracks.  Blade surface was refinished with a scotch-brite belt.  Edge was set at 16dps, sharpened to 1000 grit and stropped with .25u diamond paste on felt to leave a little tooth.

Pics are from last month, I did find replacements screws and fabricated new back spacers.  Also motivated me to start working on a better multi-compartment storage solution for all the little knife bits n bobs, like I used to keep for electronic componants.  Tired of hunting for tiny little pieces in a junk box!

Thank you guys!  Josh have you heard of, or use a fiberglass pencil?  I first saw in demonstrated on a straight razor refurbishing video.

When you dont want to(or cant) take something apart to clean down in the little nooks this fiberglass pen will scrub it shiny clean.  It actually leaves a very fine scratch pattern in the steel.

There is a downside, tiny pieces of the glass break off as you use it and can get very itchy unless you clear your bench after or do it in a controlled place and blow/dust off after.  Worth the downside for sure!

This is interesting a fiberglass pencil?  Can it be used to polish up serrated edges too?  Can you provide a photo of a spot that it may be used on before and after?  I would appreciate it.

It functions like a really tiny stiff bristle brush…only itchier.

Close up of old time straight razor:

And after a few seconds of scrubbing:

Its hard to describe but its soft enough that it didnt gouge out the bakelite or whatever ancient plastic this was, but its firm enough to remove surface rust spots off steel and gunk out of cracks leaving them almost like factory new again.  Id guess the abrasive finish is similar to a 2-3000 grit sandpaper.

The “pen” itself is just a hollow plastic body that you twist the head to extend more of the fiber bundle as it wears down. Im actually surprised how often I reach for it and I too had never heard of it before seeing some professional razor restorers using it.

Thanks Josh! Looking good! I particularly like the etching you applied to the hamon. And your picture doesn’t even show the most difficult part (I thin): getting some weird bums out of the edge/cutting surface.
